What does it mean to Help At The Polls?

Saving America is not just the responsibility of our elected officials – it is the responsibility of the citizens.

WE THE PEOPLE are responsible for securing our elections, and we must do so in order to save our country!

Each election cycle, there are multiple jobs that must be filled in order for the election to be secure and trustworthy. Two of those important jobs are a poll watcher and a poll worker.

What is a poll watcher?

Poll watchers:

  • Are inside their designated precinct while voting is happening.
  • Silent watchers and observers who are not allowed to converse with the voters, workers or anyone else inside the precinct polling station (this is critical).
  • Most often appointed by the local political party, but in some states this is not always the case.
  • Should an irregularity occur, the watcher is to step out of the precinct polling station and contact the group that appointed them to that position.
  • Are volunteers and are not paid.
  • Can work in shifts rather than the entire day in some areas.

This role requires focus and an attention to detail that is needed to catch any irregularities during the voting process, as well as self-discipline to follow the rules.

How do I become a poll watcher?

Poll watchers are usually appointed by the local political parties in that area. You are often required to go through a training process before your first shift. In some cases, there is a different entity that appoints poll watchers.

This role is critical and often overlooked by citizens looking to get involved in the political process. During an election cycle, a political party, or the entity that assigns poll watchers, will set up a system of communication that allows the watchers to communicate irregularities should they occur.

Often, there are not enough poll watchers to cover all precincts in any given election, and thus any problems or irregularities may go unnoticed. Or, if they are filled, in many instances they are filled by members of one political party or outside group, meaning there are no checks and balances.

The bottomline: If you want to win in 2024, then we need your help to secure the election – don’t let anything slip through the cracks. Sign up to be a poll watcher today!

What is a poll worker?

Poll workers are:

  • Responsible for administering the election through check-in, handing out the ballot cards, guiding voters, answering questions as needed as it relates to the machines and the process, and closing the polling station at night.
  • At the polling location from morning until night, usually before the polls open until after they close.
  • Hired and paid by the permanent local government officials in charge of the election process.
  • More likely to hold authority if an irregularity occurs and can report it immediately.
  • Allowed to speak inside the precinct (some roles during the election process are not).

How do I become a poll worker?

To become a poll worker, you generally are hired at the county level by the permanent employees who administer the elections and maintain voter rolls. These permanent employees may hold one of the following titles: election supervisor, election board, board of elections, board of commissioners, county supervisors, county judges, etc. The titles vary from state to state.

Additionally, depending on your state, the poll worker role may also have a different name, which can include: election official, judge of elections, inspector of elections, judge, inspector, or some other similar title. This is why it’s important to understand the responsibilities of the job, in order to be able to identify which position is that of a poll worker, even if it’s called something else.
